Now I know where Wegman’s hides their nutritional yeast, and where Roche Brothers keeps their hearts of palm. Nutritional yeast was an ingredient I had read about in recipes for years but I never ever saw it in the grocery store, until a few months ago when it just so happened to be sitting neatly on the shelf in a plastic container. This was the case with me and nutritional yeast. Sometimes I won’t be able to find something in the grocery store for the longest time, and then boom I’ll randomly look over to the shelf and spot it out of nowhere. I’ve been in the mood for a hearts of palm recipe so this was perfect timing. The other week I spotted hearts of palm in cans on the shelf and instantly grabbed two cans. Not quite like any other vegetable I know. They are tender, not quite crunchy but firm, and they have a nice texture. It’s hard to describe the texture itself. Simple ingredients but bursting with fresh flavors. Serving with a side salad and adding a source of plant-based protein can create a tasty, well-balanced meal.Made for summer, this hearts of palm avocado salad with alfalfa, pesto and green onions is the perfect light summer salad for a hot day. Using chickpea flour adds some plant-based protein to the recipe, but otherwise, it’s simply a good source of vegetables, carbohydrates, some fat and lots of satisfying flavor! While jackfruit, hearts of palm and artichoke are great crab replacements in terms of texture, none of these ingredients is high in protein. If serving with a main meal, keep in mind these crab cakes don’t have a lot of protein. This is an appetizer recipe typically served before a main meal. I consider a balanced meal one that contains a good source of plant-based protein, carbohydrates, fats and lots of vegetables or fruits. Wait at least 15 minutes before picking one up as they become firmer as they cool. However, if you want to pick them up, or have a firm crab cake, let them cool first. You can serve crab cakes hot if you use a knife and fork. Mix all of this together until well-combined.ĭepending on your oven, you may need to flip the crab cakes halfway through baking to evenly brown both sides. While the chips bake, prep the hearts of palm into fish fillets. Once oven has preheated, bake the chips/french fries for 30-40 minutes or until crispy on the outside, flipping them halfway through. Once you’ve prepared the vegetables and base ingredients, add them to a bowl with the flour of your choice and seasonings. Add fries to a baking sheet with a large drizzle of high heat oil, then sprinkle with fry seasoning to taste. An extra tablespoon or two of flour can help bind the crabless cakes and create a firmer texture if you pre-cook the vegetables. Pre-cooking vegetables releases some liquid which can make it difficult to hold the crab cakes together. Keep in mind they’ll cook further in a heated oven, so don’t worry about making them too soft. Just cook in a pan over medium heat, with some oil to prevent sticking, for 5-8 minutes.Ĭook time depends on how well-done you want the vegetables. If you don’t want that crisp texture, or don’t like raw onion/ celery, you can pre-cook these two vegetables. These vegetables cook in the oven but remain quite crisp once done. I prefer using raw celery and onion when making this recipe. You’ll also need to finely mince the celery, onion and parsley. ![]()
